Spotted in the wild the other day

Edit Context: They were leaving an outdoor food
truck seating area on a super windy/sunny day. Idek
what kind of work you could be doing there.

You should see the inside of an Amazon Warehouse. This
is how every laptop is held.
/u/SeeYouInTrees
The open hands palms facing inside cuz inside is dead
/u/ElbowRager
Literally walking while in rigor mortis
/u/thinprivileged
I thought of this video immediately after I typed it
/u/builder397
Is the laptop company property?

If so I wouldnt give half a fuck either.
/u/ElbowRager
Yeah. The corpo boys (n girls) get MacBooks, but us
lowly warehouse folks get old ass HP's and ThinkPads.
/u/ElbowRager
Honestly, wouldn't be surprised. You'd think a trillion
dollar tech company would have better...tech.
/u/Violoner
Sorry, Bezos needs the money to build a 10,000 year
clock inside of a mountain
/u/Suicideduck710
No kidding lmao fuck
/u/Kelvinek
Better odds of breaking fragile macbook, than sturdy
thinkpad in the warehouse, warehouse people also gotta
be productive
/u/SpoonEngineT66Turbo
Idk what these people are smoking. I have never seen
someone in any "field" position using a macbook for
work. The fancy stuff is all Thinkpads, Toughbooks, or
Latitudes, and the rest is just usually a cheap surface
pro or pretty much any non-mac laptop.

I don't know why you would even have a Mac operating
system for a warehouse job. Anyone working in that
position is about 1000x more likely to be way more
familiar with windows.
/u/Over-Meringue-5663
Thinkpads are good tho. But I'm guessing it's the dirt
cheap ones...
/u/underdoge2286
What I would give to have a thinkpad again instead of a
dell.
/u/Grentain
Holy shit they give the warehouse folks better computers
than the corpos??
/u/TheYellowChicken
Thinkpads are better anyways
/u/DevForFun150
Probably keeping it from locking so you don't have to
log back in / wake it up when you get where you're going
/u/the_orange_alligator
Is this like how you can spot a chicfila employee by
having them do something and seeing if they say "my
pleasure"
/u/weenis_machinist
And you know you messed up when a worker at a Disney
resort tells you to "have a Disney day"
/u/GTK_Aztech
I wasn't going to be working at Chic Fila in the first
place, but I really ain't if they make you say "my
pleasure." "Thanks" and "no problem" are the best I can
do.
/u/awkwardaustin609
Didn't see this comment until I just left mine talking
about amazon warehouse leads lmao
/u/M1dor1
every IT guy ever holds their laptop like that
/u/MoldyLunchBoxxy
I was about to write this and saw this comment. Ty
/u/himasaltlamp
Haha was gonna say this!
/u/Deep_stares
I was just about to start typing the same thing, haha.
/u/ElbowRager
Not my drawing* it's by u/Hawthornehoots

Saw it a long time ago and saved it because it was so
accurate.
/u/Aye_Surely
So you don't keep it on the lap while walking? Nuts
/u/horenso05
They have a Claude Code session open and don't want to
close the lid.
/u/gthing
This. And also it seems like people don't realize you
can remote control a claude code session on your phone
with /remote-control.
/u/BergaDev
Remote control still needs the laptop open though, why
so many are buying Mac Minis
/u/husfyr
You can get Amphetamine which keep the mac open even
though the lid is closed.
/u/eightofdiamonds
Took me a second to understand how amphetamine helps the
Macbook.
/u/Nervous_Pokke
Lol me too.. like okie if you say so
/u/movzx
macOS has this feature built in. You just have to open
the terminal and run caffeinate
/u/blue-coin
sudo pmset -a disablesleep 1
/u/UnrelentingStupidity
Amph is ultimately not advisable because MacBooks are
designed to dissipate heat opened. At least, don't do it
when it's in a backpack sleeve or left in a hot car.
/u/anothergaijin
I love Mac app names
/u/AJohnnyTruant
Remote control still needs the host process on your
computer to run
/u/BodybuilderMany6942
Surely you could just go on the PC settings and make it
so closing the lid doesnt put it to sleep or whatever?
/u/GreekGott
It's terrible, it loses sync all the time. It also
"freezes"; you send commands and it doesn't reflect on
your terminal. I switched to tmux + tailgate. The whole
thing feels like an after thought.
/u/GreekGott
It needs multiple parts, but once you understand how it
works, it's simple.

Yes, you can SSH into your local machine, but the thing
with ssh is that you're kinda screwed when you lose
connection, switching from WiFi to cellular, random
internet connection, that kind of thing. That's where
mosh comes to play; you setup a mosh server on your
local machine, connect via Termux on Android or
Termius/Moshi on ios.

Tmux sessions are permanent until you end them, so even
if ssh dies, we can reattach to those sessions and keep
it.

Tailscale helps create a private network, so I can view
applications hosted on the my laptop anywhere, this is
also the IP I use to mosh/ssh. So 127.0.0.1:8080 can be
tailscale_ip:8080. It's sweet.

You can prompt ChatGPT to help you set it up, but it
looks like this...

/u/JeffSergeant
Or set most laptops to not sleep when the lid is closed
/u/CanadianTrashInspect
Not most corporate laptops. Have you ever had a job?
/u/ParentheticalComment
Enterprise settings disable this. Unfortunately.
/u/yanmax
I heard that joke before, but I always wonder why they
just don't change the "Power Options" so that when the
lid closes it doesn't do anything. That's been the first
thing I change in a new computer since my first laptop.
/u/EnzoDeg40
This option only works if the Mac is powered on. If it's
not connected to an external battery or a power outlet,
it will go to sleep.
/u/TheStorMan
Seems like terrible design
/u/Obvious_Advice_6879
Why do you think that? For most users, and even
engineers pre AI, you'd just end up draining the battery
all the time for no reason. Makes a lot more sense to
have it default to sleeping for most users and use
cases.

Also, separately, Macs actually rely on airflow via the
keyboard for cooling, so it would get pretty hot if it
was doing anything intensive while the lid is shut.
/u/lynivvinyl
Isn't that a Macintosh point of pride? Like the
underside mouse charging port.
/u/lyth
Haha! Isn't "that seems like terrible design" one of
their taglines?

I think it was they used after "think different" and
before "1000 songs in your pocket"
/u/TheGloomyWoodpecker
Preventing overheating is not a terrible design.
/u/deaconsc
In some corporations their green policy cannot be
changed (or replaces your settings every now and then,
been there, done that)

Also I was carrying laptops like this for years now
even when I knew I can close the lid. I dunno, feels
better when I have to move around. Personal preferences
/u/genuine_sandwich
This. Amphetamine is a MacOS plugin that prevents your
computer from using sleep mode or logging out when you
close the lid. I use it for this reason.
/u/After-Trifle-1437
I'm gonna out myself as uneducated here, but what's
"Claude Code"?
/u/likwitsnake
Swap Claude with Codex and this is me
/u/Wobbly5ausage
I do the same thing sometimes but not when walking
outside lol only inside when I need to move from one
room to another
/u/IncurableAdventurer
Same. Not often, but when I do I get a sense of guilt
because I shouldn't be doing it haha
/u/PassivelyAwkward
Same. I use a 16" laptop and before I started WFH, this
is how I'd carry around my laptop the office. Now I
still do this at home.

I'd be worried if he was holding it from the monitor
half but the keyboard half? Eh? I've never dropped my
phone or any electronic device in over two decades.

What kills me about this is that whoever setup this
server doesn't realize you can put the laptop in
clamshell mode. It baffles me when technical people like
engineers have no idea how to use a computer.
/u/TheThiefMaster
Yeah just set "action when lid is closed" from "sleep"
to "do nothing". Done.

It's been an option as long as laptops have had closure
sensors.
/u/-Xi_Jinping-
It's different on a Mac, but yeah.
/u/Fluid_Advice684
It's even easier to set it that way on Mac
/u/OnceMoreAndAgain
How could it possibly be easier than changing a dropdown
from "sleep" to "do nothing" lol. Does the Mac read your
mind?
/u/Immediate-Tutor8672
It's not. Nothing is easier on a mac, unless you
download an app for every pesky fucking simple
functionality. Ask apple users how to do something
simple that you can on other OSs, and 90% of the time
their answer's going to be "there's an app you can
download".
/u/PM-Mormon-Underwear
I have a Mac for work that's hella locked down and this
pains me so much. They don't even have a volume mixer by
default.
/u/JD0x0
Absolute shitboxes. Soo many people used to suggest
Apple to me because I "do music" and they've always been
disappointing, at best.

Garageband would crash half the time when trying to do
a single-track recording over 5 minutes long. When I
finally could get something to work, and I save a file.
Corrupted next time I try to open it. Fantastic
products.
/u/starari
It's easy when you're used to macos and already know
where it is, it's annoying when you're used to windows.
I use both and it's not "easier". I tried and after
checking "displays" "battery" "general" "desktop &
screen saver" "security & privacy" I gave up.
/u/hellomistershifty
dude so easy on a mac it's just ctrl+option+cmd+P then a
four finger downward swipe then enter your root password
then click the lock that says 'are you absolutely sure
you want to change a thing" then enter your root
password again. so obvious idk how everyone doesn't know
that
/u/NefariousnessFar1247
Somehow Xi Jinping commenting on a thread started by Qin
Shi Huang is quite funny to me.
/u/SecreteMoistMucus
We'll never know how
/u/TheeseDragonFruit
For some reason (possibly unfounded) I don't want the
screen to sit on a hot surface for days. So, I prefer
not to close it either.
/u/passionfruit2378
I was just going to say this lol.
/u/coolsilentebeans
Same. Also might miss errors or other issues with it
closed
/u/ChengliChengbao
the unibody aluminum macbook pro lineup exausted hot air
upwards, from the gap between the screen hinge

closing the lid blocks the exaust and overheats the
device

/u/ActualWhiterabbit
operating while closed doesn't seem to be a primary use
case for a laptop
/u/Deep90
Apple has had a long history of overheating/thermal
issue related lawsuits.
/u/Vegetable_Bank4981
I'm a solid engineer and a somewhat below average
computer user. They're correlated skills only. Being a
dumbass actually makes me better at testing though, I
catch a lot of stuff the other devs missed because their
power user workflows sidestepped the issue. My stupid
ass using three versions out of date safari with no ad
blocker gets it all.
/u/Siks7Ate9
I had a laptop that wouldn't enter sleep mode(weirdest
thing was that it was sometimes lol), it would
eventually get quite warm when the lid was closed
without me realising it.

Its also probably just way easier to keep it open and
make people aware to not touch or move it and pull out
cables.
/u/w0rlds
They know, and it is probably set to do nothing when the
lid closes. Closing the lid reduces cooling capacity.
/u/Mysteriy21
that laptop there probably has some bug that prevented
it from going into clamshell mode, it's not too uncommon
for a bug like that to occur
/u/TaroProfessional7
"Engineer" is a term that gets thrown around very
loosely in the IT world. There are very few actual
engineers, but there are quite a few technicians who
have the title of engineer because it helps their egos.
/u/AkronOhAnon
And that is why invaluable tools like this exist

PLA, probably. Though it does say to use PETG.
/u/ifeelkindaYeeee
All y'all in here and not one "Hand of Claude?"
Terrible. Everyone take a lap.
/u/Haggisboy
Next time Reddit goes down, it's because someone closed
the lid.
/u/smthomaspatel
I would think anybody who knows how to run a server
knows how to keep their laptop from going to sleep when
you close it. Silly me.
/u/jebarson_j
Imagine running a server without knowing that you can
configure to not sleep or shut down the machine even
when the lid is closed.
/u/Siks7Ate9
They are walking outside though, pretty sure for a
server you would want stable Internet connection.
/u/thinprivileged
I'd find someone to 3d print something to prevent that
from closing
/u/HalloweenersOSRS
Why? Just put it into never sleep mode 🤷
/u/OpeningLeopard
Can't let their agent go to sleep.
/u/M23707
Yep, they are "working" ! 🙌
/u/metabyte9
the agent is probably dizzy as hell watching the floor
spin around from that chaotic grip. They are absolutely
fighting for their life in that webcam feed right now
/u/WinterSector8317
"I was just using it normally and it broke in half!"
/u/TheVoicesOfBrian
I work in IT, so I know this a-hole is going to say
exactly that.
/u/WinterSector8317
I've been in IT and auto repair, same idiotic excuses
/u/AndreTheShadow
I fix chromebooks in a middle school and I've heard this
so many times.
/u/WinterSector8317
Kids making stupid, blatantly false excuses is expected

Having a 30 year old tell you with a straight face that
thousands of dollars of damage just suddenly happened
from "normal use" is a different animal
/u/AndreTheShadow
Oh, I get that from the teachers.
/u/DarkEmblem5736
IT guy here. Walking between offices, this is what I do
when you dont want the lid closed. Just dont bump it
into anything.
/u/staling_lad
Isn't there an option on windows that sets exactly what
closing the lid does? I've set it to just turn the
display off by now.
/u/digitalplebeian
I don't want to have to remember to manually put my
laptop to sleep because walking with it open upsets
other people.

Bro probably has a local AI agent ripping while he's
going on about his life and holding the laptop he owns.
Lol
/u/evilducky6
This is probably a macbook
/u/Ok-Cantaloupe-7697
Claude is working hard, no doubt
/u/NickBurnsCompanyGuy
Ahhhh looks to be one of MY end users
