Why on earth is the second compression taking so long...
Ohhhhh
/u/presticus
I was thinking "this is neat, but a cube would be more
satisfying."

10/10 satisfying ending.

I read 'I thought my wife died' and it threw me for a
good few seconds...

I thought the video ended too soon
/u/Kangar
The machine was preparing by chanting to itself:

"I think I can, I think I can..."
/u/Immediate_Song4279
Squishing it along the other axis.

Literally. I went from wow that didn't compress that
much to what the FUCK real quick

Edit: nevermind. I thought it made a perfect aluminum
roll using some sort of witchcraft. Turns out I was just
looking at the machinery... Still a cool cube though...
/u/Entire_Dog_5874
I thought the same. "Wow... look at that thing! Oh
wait."😂
/u/ResolveLeather
Yup. High torque usually means low speed.
/u/Morgasm42
There was a second where I thought you were trying to
convince me it crushed them into a shiny rod.
/u/Ok-Lawyer6864
I did the classic old man move the phone to my eyes "no
effing way" until I saw it lol
/u/Treethulhu
Me out here with my crappy eyesight isn't alone. I'm not
old, but the 40s have made me see some obvious decline
lol
/u/UB3R__
Same, "wow it's so shiny".... until I saw the cube.
/u/Kerblaaahhh
You have one hour to pick up your cube.
/u/TheBeatGoesAnanas
Your cube has been towed
/u/Dartmouthest
Is it about my cube?
/u/StrugglingSoul
I had one of those WHAT moments and then I saw it
/u/frostygrin
Where did it go? ...Whoa!

Man I couldn't remember if this was a Futurama or
Simpsons joke. I can see both the Professor and Burns
being in the scene in my head.

Simpsons, when Homer was Mr Burns's assistant

/u/Old-Confidence6971
What do you think that cube is worth in aluminum?
/u/Immediate_Song4279
like, $150. Assuming the stated weight is correct.
/u/oxwof
On average, about $200. Maybe a little less at that
quality
/u/Revolutionary-Put766
In California you get about $1.15-$1.65 per lb. So this
would be around $575.
/u/caboosetp
Is that for aluminum itself or is that for the deposit
refund?
/u/Revolutionary-Put766
Just the aluminum as far as I know. 🤷‍♂️
/u/Background-Cream-285
is the value the same in every state?

if not, where was this located?
/u/ragzilla
Aluminum Cans Scrap Price USD/LB in USA and Canada Scrap
Yards Today - Aluminum Scrap | ScrapMonster

has reported prices by location. The US nationwide
average is 0.61/lb. Some places have higher prices (like
California, which was at $1.67 on the most recent
submitted prices).
/u/Yara__Flor
At a nickel a can, $800
/u/jimmy_three_shoes
In Michigan it's 10 cents a can! $1600!
/u/Smat-8
I sell 10 truck loads of cans a month. Mill price is
around $1.18 per lb right now.
/u/noafro1991
Red cola can compressed against the left side as it
finishes lol
/u/fragmental
Oh, haha, bottom of the screen. The reddit text was
obscuring it.
/u/scrotumscab
Take one down, pass it around. 15,998 cans...
/u/Locketship
This is soda pressing
/u/HumbleWalrus1072

This is a quality joke.
/u/Horror_Rub8609
It's the 6th comment on a popular post. lol "the bottom

/u/ConfessSomeMeow
Its upside is limited because it is a common joke to
make when this video is posted - so it'll probably only
be upvoted by people who have seen the joke fewer than 2
or 3 times.

My uncle in Colorado had one of these when I was a kid
except it was for one can at a time and it was mounted
on his kitchen wall
/u/Jay__Riemenschneider
My buddy had one of these instead of a trashcan and it
was built into a cabinet. That's how I learned they were
WAY richer than I thought.
/u/gcalig
My rich aunt had one too, fifty years later I still
think, why? My only conclusion is maybe their garbage
collection was restricted or priced by cubic feet ...
/u/Jay__Riemenschneider
It's one of those things that at a certain income level
is just like "Why not?"

That house had a few things that are still like "What
the fuck?"

But it didn't faze them. While we all felt like Richie
Rich's friends.
/u/Following-Complete
The smell of that machine must be infernal with all the
sodas mixing together and sitting in the sun allday.
/u/justaride80
And beer and Yoo-Hoo.
/u/Sploobert_74
I worked for a beer distributor. They would take the out
of code beer out back and crush the cans, while full,
and the smell of old beer was nauseating.
/u/justaride80
Same. In the early 2000s, I destroyed pallets of beer
one summer. Bottles and cans. Had to break the bottles
with a hammer and slice the side of the cans with a
knife without opening the tops. Caught shards of glass
with my face and arms. Good times back then
/u/Chance_Stay7361
Usually by the time the cans get to this point they're
bone dry with no smell ... and unless this is some
unusual situation where this is truly all soda cans, it
would smell like beer if anything.
/u/bangbangracer
I remember as a kid, I loved the annual trip to the
recycler. We never recycled any of our various drink
cans over the year, and we'd take them to the waste
facility to sell them. My sister and I got to split the
money.

The weirdest part of the whole process was the smell of
the waste facility. It was a mix of pop and oil. Plus,
it was next to trash being processed, so there was that
added smell.

https://giphy.com/gifs/cXblnKXr2BQOaYnTni
/u/Wozar
Ok. That was WAY more compressed than I was expecting!
/u/dalgeek
Aluminum cans take up about 15 68 times more space than
the blocks of aluminum used to make them.

EDIT: Yeah it's 64-74 times. Aluminum is 2.7x dense as
water, so a 355mL can full of aluminum would have a mass
of 958.5g, but the can is made from 13-15g of aluminum.
/u/apexxin
Looks a bit more than that.
/u/ConfessSomeMeow
I see 14 grams as a typical empty 355ml can weight.

Aluminum is 2.70 g/cm³, which means it is 5.2ml of
aluminum. So that means the can takes up 68 times more
aluminum than the space it contains (to say nothing of
the additional space around them, since they don't pack
perfectly)

I would find it difficult to believe that the
compressed block of aluminum cans is 78% air, so I think
you are right.
/u/Vanscoten
I used to love doing this to cars in GTA 3 when I was
younger.
/u/Vanscoten
Car compactors in the junkyard.
/u/viral_virus
Yeah really, I missed out.
/u/fragmental
One time I wrecked my car and it flipped up in the air
and landed in the trash compactor and I couldn't get out
and then the trash compactor compacted me.
